I often find myself filled with deep thoughts that I feel might be worth something to other people; though, whether these thoughts actually are worth anything to anyone is certainly debatable. Never the less I've decided to take the time to throw them into the bottomless ocean that is the Internet on the off chance that anyone finds them to be worth his or her time.
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
As a preliminary disclaimer, I’ve never been much into politics. My knowledge of how things work in the deepest caverns of our political system is base at best. If you asked me how many branches of government there are I would probably have to pause for a brief moment to think that the answer is three. All that being said, I DO know enough about our system to know that if voter turnout is only in the 55% range (which is where it usually where it is for presidential elections (“National Voter Turnout in Federal Elections”)) then almost half of our population is not being represented properly. That’s what I would like to address today.
Voting is not a “civic duty” like so many people say it is. Voting is a wonderful gift that our founding fathers gave to us in order to make sure that we would always be the ones in charge of our own futures. Voting is our chance to literally say to our government “this is what I want you to do,” and have them actually listen to us all. Voting is exactly how we get to make sure that our voices heard.
Before you shout “naïveté!” let me say that I do understand that voting will only do so much to quell certain political back dealings that we all know happen. There’s not much to be done about that. That being said, if everyone votes then we at least stand some chance of seeing the changes in America that we all want to see. It’s a much better chance than if we give up and let the money hoarders run things. So as we head into the new year when we will be voting for either a new president or our current one I would like to greatly encourage anyone who happens to see this (even though I know the number will be low) to take the time to pay attention to what’s happening in the race and, when the day comes, vote. It’s your chance to have a say, don’t let it slip past.
Individuality is such a wonderful thing. It gives rise to such great diversity and innovation. The abstract mind of a musician gives those less talented in the methods of composition a way to feel what they feel without knowing how to feel it. The analytical mind of a mathematician gives us technology to view worlds that until only today were nothing more than ideas of science fiction (brownie points to anybody who reads today’s article on CNN about the planet that orbits two suns and has been unofficially named Tatooine). There is not a single iota of doubt in my mind that the unique ideas and desires of each individual are something to be celebrated.
However, agree with me as most will, we all still cannot help but to immediately
